Brisbane City will welcome NPL Western Australia side Olympic Kingsway SC to Imperial Corp Stadium for the Hahn Australia Cup Round of 16 on Tuesday 12 August at 7:30pm – and while this will be the first-ever meeting between the two sides, the visitors arrive with some pedigree and plenty of ambition.
Based in Perth’s northern suburbs, Olympic Kingsway was founded in 1953 by Macedonian and Greek migrants, and has a long history in Western Australian football. After some early success in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the club spent much of the following decades rebuilding – and has enjoyed a strong resurgence over the last few years, most recently claiming the Premiership and Grand Final double in 2024.
Affectionately known as “The Green Machine”, they earned promotion to the NPL WA in 2023 and quickly established themselves as a top-tier side. Their 2025 form has been solid – currently sitting second in the NPL WA – and they enter this tie off the back of a dramatic 4–3 extra-time win over Melbourne Victory in the previous round.
Led by head coach David Tough, Olympic Kingsway’s squad is headlined by all-time Australia Cup leading goalscorer Liam Boland. Returning from long-term injury just four weeks ago, Boland added another two goals to his cup tally in Kingsway’s ‘cupset’ victory in the Round of 32, including an injury-time equaliser to send the match to extra time, where he then went on to net the winner from the penalty spot.
Heading into this clash off the back of a 3-1 league win over Fremantle City on August 9, Kingsway and Brisbane City will both fancy their chances of progressing to the quarter finals.
Statistically, they’ve been one of the stronger attacking sides in Western Australia this year – averaging over 2 goals per game. However, this will be their first trip east in the competition – and they’ll be facing a Brisbane City side that is yet to concede a single goal in the Australia Cup and qualifying rounds, with the backing of the Imperial Corp Stadium faithful.
In recent weeks, City have been in equally strong attacking form, in great part thanks to the addition of Southampton FC academy product Marcus Barnes, who has hit the ground running in Brisbane, linking up with City favourites Kye Bolton and Malakai Love-Semira.
The Azzurri head into this match as Queensland’s sole representatives in the Round of 16, after Peninsula Power and Gold Coast Knights both bowed out in the previous round to A-League opposition. With pedigree on the national stage, strong form heading into the match, and a passionate home crowd pushing them on, City will be eager to book their place in the quarter finals for the first time in the competition’s modern format.
