Brisbane City are just one win away from a return to the national stage as they head to Cornubia Park on Wednesday night for a high-stakes Kappa Queensland Cup Men’s Quarter Final against FQPL1 side Logan Lightning.

The winner of this clash not only books a place in the Kappa Queensland Cup Semi Finals – where Olympic FC or Taringa Rovers await – but also secures qualification for the Hahn Australia Cup National Rounds, a competition City knows all too well.

Last season saw the Azzurri go toe-to-toe with A-League opposition in Western Sydney Wanderers, pushing the giants all the way in a narrow 2–1 loss at a packed Imperial Corp Stadium. That performance was no anomaly, rather a reminder of a club with a proud national pedigree. Brisbane City were twice crowned NSL Cup champions in 1977 and 1978, and nearly five decades on, that tradition of cup football still runs deep.

They arrive in strong cup form, having seen off Ipswich FC (2–0), Mt Gravatt (6–0), and Coomera (8–0) in dominant fashion. In that most recent outing, all eight goals came from different scorers – a sign of the squad’s depth and shared hunger heading into this decisive fixture.

Logan, meanwhile, have also impressed in the Cup. The hosts come into Wednesday’s clash after a hard-fought 4-3 win over Redlands, building on earlier wins over Mitchelton (6-1) and North Star (4-0). Jacob Carre and Thomas Lumer have been among their main threats this season, both among the club’s top scorers in the league.

The home side’s league campaign has been more up and down – a 2-0 win over Magic United has been their best recent result, although overshadowed by heavy defeats to Caboolture (7-0) and Broadbeach (3-0).

With history on their side and national ambition front of mind, City will be out to make another statement. The task won’t be easy – Logan have shown to be dangerous and will certainly be fired up in front of a home crowd – but for a club with City’s national pedigree, these are the nights that matter.

City’s Academy boys are also set to be in action earlier in the afternoon at Cornubia Park, which is certain to contribute to a big Azzurri contingent watching on in the South.

Kick-off is set for 7:30pm, Wednesday June 18 at Cornubia Park.
